#010 - The Hardest Part About Running a Small Trades Business - Jeremiah Evans

Parkes Wilterdink Season 1 Episode 10

In this episode of The Hidden Hustle, we sit down with Jeremiah Evans, founder of Iowa All Pro Heating & Cooling, to dive into his journey from the Navy to becoming a successful business owner in the trades.

Jeremiah shares how his upbringing on Des Moines’ south side and military service shaped his work ethic and leadership. We explore his path through the HVAC industry—from apprentice to journeyman to finally taking the leap into business ownership. Jeremiah candidly discusses the challenges of wearing every hat in a growing company, the learning curve of pricing services correctly, and the importance of doing things "by the book."

He opens up about his faith, how prayer and persistence have helped him navigate slow seasons, and the pivotal moments where trusting the process paid off. Jeremiah also shares practical insights on growing through networking, lessons learned from working with home warranties, and his vision for All Pro’s future — including his dream of handing off the business and retiring to a beach.

If you’re an entrepreneur or trades professional looking for a raw and relatable business journey, this episode is packed with wisdom, humility, and practical advice.

Try not to stress too much because it all ends up working out,

00:00:03:13 - 00:00:05:02
Unknown
Keep moving forward. Just keep moving forward.

00:00:05:02 - 00:00:06:22
Unknown
if you're doing the right things,

00:00:06:22 - 00:00:08:22
Unknown
providing a great customer service.

00:00:08:22 - 00:00:11:19
Unknown
I really don't think you could go wrong in the service industry,

00:00:11:19 - 00:00:16:07
Unknown
you cannot lose if you do not quit. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I like it. I like that.

00:00:22:23 - 00:00:30:04
Unknown
Jeremiah. Welcome to the show. Thanks for having me. Yeah, absolutely. Now, the real question is, who would win in a fight?

00:00:30:15 - 00:00:42:11
Unknown
100 men or one gorilla? I'm going to go with the gorilla. Oh, you're kidding me. Yeah, I'm gonna go with the gorilla. Really? Yeah. Oh, my gosh, have you seen this trend on line?

00:00:42:13 - 00:00:45:01
Unknown
I have not seen this trend. Very big deal.

00:00:45:01 - 00:01:00:23
Unknown
What? They're just trying to be. Whoo! Yeah, it was a it was a stupid Twitter post. Who would win in a fight? Like, it's the guy said. You know, I think if 100 guys were really dedicated to it, they could take down one gorilla with no weapons.

00:01:01:01 - 00:01:21:09
Unknown
I don't, you know, I don't know. I mean, I think a lot of people are scared of a gorilla, so I don't I have to have some dedicated men for that one. But, I'm going with the gorilla for today, and until I see otherwise, it's okay. Okay. They get tired fast. Well, but they have a lot of power, so I think they could take out some some guys pretty quickly, for sure.

00:01:21:12 - 00:01:47:01
Unknown
Yeah, for sure. Anyways. Anyways, way to break the ice though. Like that. Yeah. So how's our pro weather? What are some jobs you're working on right now? Yeah, I will. Pros. We're working on, we've got a multi-family project right now that's, been taking up most of our time. A lot of maintenance. Maintenance stuff going on, you know, ACS or, you know, people are starting to kick on their AC sporadically here.

00:01:47:01 - 00:02:13:07
Unknown
So, you know, getting out there and maintaining, ACS for customers and, not a not just, you know, everyday stuff as far as, you know, just keeping making sure that guys got what they need and, and all that. So. Yeah. So what's this big job you're telling me about earlier? Yeah. So it's a multi-family project.

00:02:13:09 - 00:02:40:09
Unknown
Back in the day, they used to do, so if you had multiple units or, or spaces that were leased, they would use, one or 2 or 3 systems for those ten, 12 units. Now code, fire code does not allow you to, share the same air in those spaces. So, the city is really cracked down on that.

00:02:40:09 - 00:02:58:15
Unknown
And I think this year, if I'm not mistaken, is you have to have it done this year. So a lot of, landlords are scrambling to do this and they're finding out it's costing them a lot of money. So, so some of these people are just selling because they don't want to deal with it, you know, but, so, yeah.

00:02:58:15 - 00:03:17:21
Unknown
So basically we tore out three systems and then we're putting in what we call, a VRF system, which is, in most cities, similar to like a mini split. It's a, you know, that hangs on the wall. And there's, you know, each space has its own and, and, so now they're no longer sharing the same air, basically for fire code.

00:03:18:00 - 00:03:45:12
Unknown
So. Yeah. Yeah. Nice. So take us back. What was life growing up for you? Yeah, I grew from. Yeah. I'm. I'm from Des Moines. Grew up, grew up mainly on the south side of the mine. Went to all the South side schools. Graduated from Lincoln. Brother. Sister. Younger. We, you know, back then, you know, that's when you really ran the streets.

00:03:45:12 - 00:04:06:00
Unknown
And, you know, we kind of, you know, we came in after the street lights were off, so on. So, Yeah. So growing up wise, I kind of did a lot of what I wanted to do. You know, I didn't have a lot of structure, so I, like I said, kind of kind of just did what I felt was right, which probably wasn't right.

00:04:06:00 - 00:04:33:23
Unknown
But, but luckily I graduated from Lincoln and. Oh two and, where'd you after that? After that, I, I actually joined the military, so I was in the United States Navy. I served on multiple ships for four years span. And then right after the military, I, I landed right in the trade.

00:04:33:23 - 00:05:02:01
Unknown
So I was about 20 years ago and, kind of never looked back since, you know. Yeah. Yeah. So after you were done with the military, where was, where was the first place you worked? I worked for a company out of Carlisle called Roberts Brothers. And, they did plumbing and Hvac, so I was just a helper, and and I did a lot of plumbing, did a lot of Hvac, and, I don't know, probably after six months, I was like, you know, a lot of kind of kind of like this.

00:05:02:01 - 00:05:29:21
Unknown
And, and I went to tech school and, and I just continued to grow. What's that process look like from helper to journeyman to the next step. Right. Apprentice journey or, helper apprentice, then journeyman. Yup. Okay. And then master to the. At the end. Yeah. So how long are those steps and what was the schooling like? It's changed since I was, since I first started.

00:05:29:23 - 00:05:49:21
Unknown
But, I guess now what it looks like is, you know, you find a job, well, you find a place, and usually they'll, they'll want you to be a helper for six months to a year to, you know, get your feet wet and, you know, and kind of have a, you know, recap on a do you really want to do this?

00:05:49:21 - 00:06:14:14
Unknown
Because if you do, then we need to get you into apprenticeship schooling. And, and that's a, that's a commitment on the company and, and the, The Apprentice. So, but yeah. So then you go to the apprenticeship school, and that's usually a for your, for your schooling can be done online. Can, can be done mixed, depending on what, you know, where you go.

00:06:14:16 - 00:06:36:20
Unknown
And then then after you get your hours and your schooling and take your test, then you can apply for your journeyman test and that's just you know, multiple choice tests that once you pass, you get, you know, you can get your current or your journeyman, and I guess the next step from there would be, you know, you wait a few more years and then you take your test for your master, right.

00:06:36:22 - 00:06:58:23
Unknown
And then and that's the ultimate goal is to get the master right. And so yeah. So you're in Carlisle, you're doing plumbing Hvac. Jumped around a few times in different companies. Yeah. I so where I was at there, you got, they got really end up being slow in the winter time. So they laid me off and I was in schooling at the same time.

00:06:58:23 - 00:07:17:11
Unknown
So obviously a a little bit of a bummer at that time. But luckily I found another job down in Milo, Iowa with, another company that I spent a lot of my time. And that's where I really probably honed a lot of my skills at that time. And then, I don't know how far you want me to go with this, but no.

00:07:17:11 - 00:07:49:11
Unknown
Good. But let's, keep it. Keep it organic. Yeah. So, yeah, I basically I did that for five, six years, I'd say. And then, a good buddy of mine. Bought a geothermal drilling business. And that's a whole nother. That was a big deal back then. It's it's still a little prevalent, but, so he hired me, or he wanted me to come basically run his service installation side of the geothermal, stuff.

00:07:49:13 - 00:08:09:02
Unknown
What he did the drilling and the outside stuff and all that. But, that last about a year, things didn't kind of go the way we were helping. And then I then I went and worked for a, a supplier, in town, they were looking for an Hvac, sell inside sales position.

00:08:09:02 - 00:08:42:23
Unknown
So basically, I was, mingling with contractors, helping them get material parts or helping them with projects that they were doing. So, and that's where I grew, like, my passion for more of the engineering side or the design side. I really loved it. What I was doing there. Unfortunately, I had some problems with management, so, you know, after about four years of that, I, got offered another job with the commercial company.

00:08:43:01 - 00:09:07:22
Unknown
Same role. Know what? That what? That company, it was more on the field contractor side. So I was in charge of, project based work, so I would bid, large commercial project and then, you know, get all the things in order for that and then get the guys up to speed on what that project consist of, and then making sure I got material, make sure that guys were doing stalling plans.

00:09:08:02 - 00:09:24:03
Unknown
Right. Stuff like that. So I did a lot of that, about that time, about well, before I started that, that was a that was when I really was thinking about going out on my own. So I was probably.

00:09:24:05 - 00:09:51:01
Unknown
Oh, well, that was me 3 or 4, seven years ago. I'd say maybe. Maybe a little bit longer. And I told the, the contract that time that I was just, you know, contemplating on going out on my own and, and, and at that time, he was just like, you know, he was he's like, you'll make so much money here that you won't even, need to, you won't even want to worry about all those headaches, you know?

00:09:51:01 - 00:10:14:01
Unknown
So, it was good for a few years. But it still wasn't for me. I still had a passion to, you know, start on my own and create something for myself. So about two years in, ended up completing what I needed to complete to get. I'd be able to start a business. That was the masters.

00:10:14:03 - 00:10:36:21
Unknown
He my masters. Yeah, because I kind of had a journeyman. I just never I just never took the test for my masters. Yeah. And once I. So I got my masters, I started doing the things, and then another company came to me. Another supply supplier came to me, basically was like, we want you.

00:10:36:23 - 00:11:05:18
Unknown
We're opening up a track department in our location. I would really like to, you know, to work for us and kind of gave me offer I can refuse at that point. So I tried it, I tried it, and, it was too corporate for me, so, I gave it to you. I gave it a year and a half, and then I, you know, I got the LLC, I got a van, I got everything I needed, and then about two year mark with them, I, I was like, I'm going out full time on my own.

00:11:05:18 - 00:11:29:03
Unknown
And then did you do a few side jobs before you made the leap or. No, no, no, I, I like to do things. You're all in. Well, I'd like to do things because side, side work is kind of. It's good. It's good money. It's a good way to bring money in, but it's not technically the legitimate way to do things, you know?

00:11:29:05 - 00:11:56:19
Unknown
And for some reason, I don't know if my grandma or what, but, like, I just I just have a problem. Like, if I don't do thing kind of the work, you know? So I'm kind of, you know, and when it comes to that, and I think that's why also, you know, the three years that we've been in business, I think it's definitely helped or it's, it helped our growth, you know, just keep you know, it's crossing the T's and.

00:11:56:19 - 00:12:26:15
Unknown
Right. But, but. Yeah. Yeah. So, so what were those first few jobs like? So, I, you know, it was all a blur, honestly. But, I'm trying to even think, the only reason why I remember this one. Because it came up on my feed. On my Facebook feed. My first job was, a couple that we go to church with, and it was a furnace install.

00:12:26:17 - 00:12:57:22
Unknown
So that was technically probably my first job. Went well. You know, went well. And then, you know, word of mouth was kind of just kind of spread from there, kind of spread from there. And, was lucky to partner with some few people. But honestly, I don't really remember. It's a blur, honestly. What were some of those for some of those first growing pains, you know, getting your first few jobs and getting everything figured out and doing it yourself.

00:12:57:23 - 00:13:22:03
Unknown
Growing pains. Well my vision and I think I guess I'll kind of start over a little bit here. But so before I left my last job, my employer, I, I spent six months getting things in place, like just to make it a little easier. And I think that's why the transition was I think it was great for us.

00:13:22:05 - 00:13:46:16
Unknown
But, so I already had like I said, I had the business, I had a logo, I had a wrap truck, I had a website, you know, I had all the things that a lot of maybe smaller companies probably lack. And the reason why, well, and what really helped me with this was, is that when I was in sales, I was able to work closely with some business owners.

00:13:46:21 - 00:14:11:02
Unknown
So I was able to kind of see what they do. And I think that really helped us kind of move forward fast, a little bit faster than I think of someone who just kind of bought a van and went out and. Right, you know, maybe, maybe not. But I definitely see, you know, customers will say, you know, they like our processes, they like the way we, you know, it's it's, what's the word?

00:14:11:02 - 00:14:45:02
Unknown
It's just, it's, is easier for them to just work with us because, you know, we communicate well, everything we do, all the things that just makes it easy to work with us, you know? Yeah. What was something that you didn't expect? Getting started, costs, running a business, you know, you know, insurance, maintenance tools, parts, you know, all these things that you have to have in a vehicle.

00:14:45:04 - 00:15:27:15
Unknown
And then tracking, tracking costs and making sure, you know, you're not spending too much or, and ultimately pricing, you know, pricing was the biggest thing for us that first year. You know, I was used to, you know, old school pricing, where I would charge an hourly rate that, you know, technically would only, cover my costs and not really looking at costs of the business, you know, so our first year was good, but it was rough because we could have we definitely could have, grew a little bit more, a little faster if we were to price properly.

00:15:27:15 - 00:15:55:05
Unknown
But I'd say ultimately pricing was the biggest change, and it still is today. I mean, with everything changing, pricing changing all the time. And then the company itself evolving, it's that's still a big issue. How is tariffs in, impacted your business? Obviously pricing, pricing, you know, unfortunately gone up. So obviously that affects the end user, equipment right now.

00:15:55:05 - 00:16:26:09
Unknown
Parts right now are okay, but I'm kind of curious to see what six months brings. So as a, as a day, I'd say not not greatly, but but pricing has been affected by that. So yeah. No, definitely. What's the hardest part about running a heating cooling business? Oh, right now, I guess I wear a lot of hats.

00:16:26:09 - 00:16:49:11
Unknown
You know, we're still we're a three year old company. So for me, you know, I'd like to have this conversation maybe in two years from now and see what what my answer would be. But, you know, obviously, you see, I'm wearing a, I'm wearing, you know, I'm ready to go work, you know, so out in the field, so, yeah, I just say wearing all the hats is the biggest, biggest thing I have for myself.

00:16:49:11 - 00:17:15:07
Unknown
How many people do you have on your team now? Including me, we have six. Six. Four guys in the field. Yeah. 4 or 5 guys in the field. And then, an office manager, currently, you know. Yeah. You know, what's that next hat that you, need to fill? Next hat exposition. Next position would be me.

00:17:15:09 - 00:17:39:22
Unknown
You know, someone who can run. Run the daily. I have a guy. I have someone who who can do the field stuff, but I need someone I can do a more of the service side. Maybe some sales. So I could see that position being the next big, leap forward for us, getting that position, and then, then I can focus more on more of the business side of things.

00:17:39:22 - 00:17:58:23
Unknown
Right? Yeah. Right. Yeah. What's kept you going through, tough times, you know, what's something that you like to keep in mind when you're wearing all these different hats and it gets stressful?

00:17:59:01 - 00:18:24:08
Unknown
You know, I just pray about it, honestly, you know, I, I just, you know, I, I haven't in a while, knock on wood, but, you know, I've had weeks where, on a Friday, I'd have no jobs lined up for the next week. And I had at that time I had two guys I had a, you know, get hours for, but, somehow, you know, the, the, the days feel, you know, so I'd say that's one of my biggest stress stresses right now.

00:18:24:08 - 00:18:52:20
Unknown
It's just, well, not right now, but at those slow times, because I do care and I do want my guys to be able to get their hours and, and, provide for, you know, provide for themselves. So I'd say, you know, that's probably how have you seen God open doors for you when, like when you've got those dry weeks and these specific things come online, jobs that come to mind?

00:18:52:22 - 00:19:28:12
Unknown
Yeah. I mean, so last year, last year we had, the slowest January, February. I mean, we've only been in business for three years, but we, I think we had $7,000 in sales and two and a half months. I had things pending, stuff like that. You know, like I said, I, I do, I pray about, you know, pray about things and, and, and my company was one of them, you know, obviously help guide me through, figuring out how to run a business, you know, but, yeah, I would say, you know, things just fall in place.

00:19:28:12 - 00:19:52:11
Unknown
And we landed a big, really big commercial job, and that that really, skyrocketed us for the rest of the year. Do you see our pro doing more commercial work or. Yeah, absolutely. We we tend to do like 20% commercial. Maintenance, installation, repair stuff. You know, I would say we're not, I don't have the right guy in place for doing it.

00:19:52:13 - 00:20:12:01
Unknown
You know, any more than that at this point. But, because I am that guy is the commercial guy. So, like I said, I want to feel that fill that hat as well, but, I do, I love commercial, I think it's, it's where I would like to play more in, but Residentials is, is our sweet spot right now.

00:20:12:03 - 00:20:16:17
Unknown
What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?

00:20:16:19 - 00:20:22:14
Unknown
Oh, that's a good one.

00:20:22:15 - 00:20:28:21
Unknown
I would say.

00:20:28:23 - 00:20:49:00
Unknown
Try not to stress too much because it all ends up working out, and I guess, you know. Yeah, it really does, you know, and I and I think that's helped me a lot having a business, you know, like at first. Yeah, I heard about that quite a bit. But you know now nowadays it's, it's you know I just feel like it, it just works out.

00:20:49:02 - 00:21:08:04
Unknown
Keep moving forward. Just keep moving forward. You know, keep if you do do the things that, have brought you this far, I don't think you could sell, you know, if you're doing the right things, you know, being, you know, providing a great customer service. I really don't think you could go wrong in the service industry, you know?

00:21:08:08 - 00:21:34:14
Unknown
And so you cannot lose if you do not quit. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I like it. I like that. Yeah, I know I like that. Yeah. That's a big thing, you know, because it's easy to quit, you know, and, that's definitely not something that's in my mind. I try to be a, you know, positive thinker and, and I think that's definitely helped guided me through some of those tough times, you know?

00:21:34:16 - 00:22:00:11
Unknown
So. Yeah, definitely. So what have been some of the main ways that you've gotten customers besides word of mouth, advertising, marketing, that kind of thing? Yeah, I'd say my biggest has been networking, you know, just getting out with other business owners, you know, joining some groups that be and it'd be an I would be one of them.

00:22:00:11 - 00:22:26:01
Unknown
So shout out to B and I. Yeah. Group they've been, you know, I would say two years and now maybe a little bit over two years with them. And, they definitely helped us get through our second year. They still continue to de help us, give us referrals and, and, boost our revenues. Group a great group of individuals and, I highly recommend so for those networking.

00:22:26:03 - 00:22:47:21
Unknown
So for those of you that don't under the viewers that don't understand or don't know what BNC is, can you explain that just a little bit? We better get the president in here for this one, though, being, business networking group, they, basically, a group of individuals meet every week. We meet Thursday mornings.

00:22:47:23 - 00:23:12:23
Unknown
Now, tuna, there's different chapters throughout. Well, all over, the world. But yeah, basically, you spend an hour or two, with these individuals and we all go around the room and, basically talk about our business, and you know what we're looking for that week or that month and, and then we try to give referrals to, you know, every, every either or every all the time.

00:23:12:23 - 00:23:29:01
Unknown
We try to get referrals and every week we try to make sure we have a referral for at least somebody in the group. And like I said, it's been very beneficial for us, over the last few years. Yeah, yeah, yeah. How long have you been a part of being I, I want to say two, two and a half years.

00:23:29:01 - 00:23:53:23
Unknown
So since the beginning of our pro almost, almost almost. Yeah. So how did you first learn about being a, a plumber and a realtor? They both are a part of that group. And, shout out Penny Carroll. Yeah, shout out Penny Carroll and Advanced Plumbing, our Penny Carolyn Associates. But, yeah. So they they were rooting for me to go, join the group.

00:23:54:01 - 00:24:11:18
Unknown
And, after a couple, couple of weeks visiting there, I was like, this is very awkward as well. Yeah. You know, like I said, I used it. I'm not used to, like, talking about myself or, you know, but if I go to the customers, I'm. I'm like, I can tell you what's going on with your system. I can, I can, I'm all about that.

00:24:11:19 - 00:24:32:13
Unknown
But if you get me up in like, hey, you know, the elevator pitch. Yeah, yeah, yeah, the elevator, you know? So I've definitely got a lot of work to do on that still, but, yeah. Yeah, I highly recommend networking groups. Definitely. Especially if you're a new business. Even even, you know, a veteran business, I would, you know, it would be great for growth.

00:24:32:15 - 00:25:03:00
Unknown
It definitely helped us. But. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. What other forms of marketing promotion have you done? Paid ads. Radio ads. You said you've done radio ads, right? Yeah, I've done radio. Radio. And now it's hard to track radio. So the ROI on that for us has been difficult. For the cost. We've done, you know, we've done the home warranty thing at first.

00:25:03:02 - 00:25:26:17
Unknown
That was okay at first, but definitely a sometime we don't do any more. I guess I'll just put it there for that. So tell me more about that. What is the. Was that, offer you were running or, home warranties, basically. You know, if a homeowner buys a system or buys a home, they can purchase a home warranty for the whole house that covers appliance.

00:25:26:18 - 00:25:47:17
Unknown
I mean, it covers a lot of different things depending on the, the company you go with. But some of them have preferred vendors. So one in particular reached out to us as being a vendor for them. And they, they got, you know, we received a lot of requests. I mean, we I was around in service calls, you know, ten hours a day for them.

00:25:47:19 - 00:26:26:21
Unknown
But, it was okay for a new company like us, but it wasn't sustainable for, let's just say they pay, you know, they wouldn't pay. You know, they wouldn't pay what we what needed, were kind of like they wanted, like the one man shops. That would be there. Pricing was very minimal. And then we had a lot of backlash with homeowners because they wouldn't get approved for, replacements or a repairs, you know, and a lot of homeowners don't know that, you know, a lot of homeowners will buy a home warranty because I know they've got 20 year old equipment or really old appliances or something like that.

00:26:26:23 - 00:26:48:17
Unknown
But if they don't know their actual plan, they may not be covered because it's too old, you know, it's it's aged out. And so they may give them, you know, a little bit of money, but they won't cover the full cost of a replacement. And furnace and air conditioner is pretty expensive to replace. So, you know, so I had a lot of battles with homeowners who would get denied, like, you know, blaming us.

00:26:48:17 - 00:27:19:03
Unknown
And I was like, I'm, you know, I'm just kind of the middleman trying to help you out here. And so we our stance now is we just don't do work with home warranties. Just so we don't have to deal with those headaches. You know, who's your ideal customer? You know, I, I, I like them all. I do, I like, well, I really, I mean, obviously the ones, you know, we work with them all, but, you know, probably someone who who would you trust us to do the work?

00:27:19:03 - 00:27:54:10
Unknown
I don't, I guess I don't really like over the shoulder type of, you know, but I get it, you know, I get it. Really. And I really would service to help anybody that I can. Sure. What about, ideal service type. So not ideal customer. Ideal service that, you know, what's your bread and butter? Yeah, I would say, you know, installation, service and maintenance, you know, your standard furnace and air conditioners, I would say is our bread and butter.

00:27:54:12 - 00:28:14:20
Unknown
We'll go on to commercial a little bit, too. We do maintenance on commercial. What's, air conditioner unit casting and casting. You want to know what that cost nowadays? Just say you're gonna need a loan. No. Oh. You know, I didn't plug with my duct cleaning, so we do duct cleaning, too. So that's our bread and butter, too, nowadays, so.

00:28:14:20 - 00:28:51:02
Unknown
Okay. But, a a cost can range from, you know, a full system replacement can range from 7 to 18,000, you know, depending on size, efficiency. You know, what you know what you're really looking for. If there's any add ons, stuff like that. So there's a good range, and costs so yeah, it can be a little pricey, but we do, you know, we offer financing, to multiple sources that, you know, can can help with some of that, too, and interest free as well.

00:28:51:02 - 00:29:18:08
Unknown
So, so that can be helpful if you do if you do need something like that, do you do any new home construction? We've done a couple. That's, definitely not our bread and butter. That's a game where you have to have a crew, crew who is been doing that for a while because it's very price competitive.

00:29:18:09 - 00:29:49:21
Unknown
So there's not a lot of, you know, there's not a lot of margin in that type of work unless you're doing custom, custom homes. So we don't have that crew and I don't have that patience for that. So yeah, we don't really get into that unless it's like a custom order. I can go in and design, and get really, you know, get, you know, provide a customer like, like you said, like a geothermal or radiant floor heat or you know, and get really kind of creative with making sure you have maximum comfort and a home, you know?

00:29:49:23 - 00:30:09:21
Unknown
So that's where I would play. We don't get those too often either. But, so if anybody's looking for a custom home, I'd definitely love to talk to them. So. Yeah. Yeah. For sure. Get in. Get in with the builder would be. Yeah, yeah, I know I haven't had the opportunity, and I think there's probably opportunities to get into, like, there's, there's groups for that too.

00:30:09:23 - 00:30:18:23
Unknown
But I haven't, I haven't, explored that avenue yet, so. Yeah. So.

00:30:19:01 - 00:30:32:23
Unknown
What's one thing you wish more people knew about? Oh, Pro heating cooling. One thing.

00:30:33:01 - 00:31:09:21
Unknown
Or duct cleaning, I suppose. You know, that's a new that's a new side of our business that we started, in the last year. So how does it work? We so we there's different types of duct cleaning ways of cleaning. We have a, we have a trailer or duct or a truck mounted system. So typically our process is we'll we'll bring our truck to the driveway, we'll go in your home, you know, introduce yourself, and kind of walk you through the process before we actually start the process.

00:31:09:23 - 00:31:23:22
Unknown
Because it is kind of a lot. So we have to have access to all the registers, all the, you know, all the vents and that stuff we talk about to over the phone before we even show up. Right. But we'll go through, we'll tape up all the registers with the registers event. Look at that. Yeah.

00:31:24:01 - 00:31:42:01
Unknown
Yep. Like on the sidewall or on the floor. Sure. Yeah. Stuff like that. We'll tape on those all up. Well, first we put, we put runners through everywhere because, you know, we can't get the house is dirty, you know. So put a little booties on. Yeah, a little Rudy's on. Yeah. So we, So. Yeah, we want to take care of your property for sure, but, so.

00:31:42:01 - 00:32:07:05
Unknown
Yeah, we'll put the, the put the tape on the registers. And then we have a big eight inch hose that we drag from the dirt from the truck. That we bring down to the furnace area. And we, attach that to your main trunk lines. And so we'll attach that to the trunk line, and then, we turn on our truck and it creates, like a it's, somewhere like 15,000 cfm of suction.

00:32:07:07 - 00:32:28:05
Unknown
So, yeah, it's just a massive suction. And so when you, when you tape off all those vents, you know, it's even, it's even greater. So it's, it's pulling everything it can. And that's why that's doing that. We have, we have a, air compressor in the truck to abate, things like 200 to 200. Yeah, 200 p.s.i.

00:32:28:07 - 00:32:54:17
Unknown
And then we'll go through each register with it and basically try to blow back to your main trunk. So while that suction is sucking, you know, it's sucking from that main trunk. It's, you know, we're blowing back into it. And then so we go through all the vents and do that, and then we'll go down to the main trunk, and then we'll get our, airline and we'll basically blow it back to that main section point from there, because all that kind of falls into that main duct.

00:32:54:21 - 00:33:16:01
Unknown
Yeah. And then, and then we'll, then we'll use an air compressor line and then pull it all back to the suction point. So you're, you're getting all of the dust debris, anything that's in there that's it could be microorganisms. Anything from from your furnace or from your. Yeah. Just circling, you know, because when you have windows open, doors open, you get dust.

00:33:16:01 - 00:33:36:19
Unknown
And, you know, you get all kinds of things that really, that, that's in the air, you know, that can be, you know, allergy and stuff like that, that may not get caught in the filters or if you don't have any air purification systems. So that stuff will sit in your ductwork and it just, you know, usually sits on the bottom because it's, you know, obviously gravity.

00:33:36:19 - 00:34:00:02
Unknown
But so, so as your, as your blower comes on, you know, it's kind of moving that stuff over time, through the, your ductwork and then kind of recirculating and then as you open a door or something like that and you're getting more particulate matter, you know, dust, stuff like that. Hum. And if you're in a high humidity or your basements are humidity, you could potentially have mold.

00:34:00:02 - 00:34:26:09
Unknown
Maybe in the ductwork. So we're, we're kind of capturing that stuff. And then so after we clean it, we also use a fogging system. So we, we spray it in your ductwork, when we're done cleaning. And that's kind of, what I'd call like a sanitizer. So it sanitizes the ductwork, kills any, you know, allergens, mold, you know, stuff like that.

00:34:26:09 - 00:34:48:03
Unknown
So. And then we, we close it all up, and we get the heck out of your house. Yeah. So, yeah, what would be some reasons a homeowner would want to do that? Like, are there any warning signs, things like. Yeah, yeah, I would say, signs would be are you dusting a lot? You know, that's a big sign if you're a constantly dusting.

00:34:48:05 - 00:35:08:21
Unknown
That's a sign that, because when we're pulling that vacuum, we're also kind of pulling that dust from the home a little bit, too. So if you're, if you're constantly if you're if you're out constantly dusting is a big sign. Another sign would be, if your filters are always dirty, you know, like you, you know, you know, that's a whole other topic.

00:35:08:21 - 00:35:29:17
Unknown
But filter, you know, if you have a one inch filter, it's a what? It's a one month filter. So if you're pulling it out in a month and it's plugged, then that's a sign your ductwork, you need to have someone come out and look at your ductwork and see if it's, you know, dirty. And then. The other than that, you know, those are probably the biggest signs I would say.

00:35:29:17 - 00:35:45:15
Unknown
And then maybe if you're an allergy sufferers or something like that, maybe, I mean, I know that's that can be a tough one, but, it'd be maybe wise to, you know, get some sort of air purification, a duct cleaning, and then putting something on top of that to continue to clean the air after you're done cleaning. You know?

00:35:45:17 - 00:36:00:03
Unknown
So, yeah, that's cool. You know, good spring cleaning offer. Yeah. Absolutely. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So you'll see it in here in bucks in. Yeah.

00:36:00:05 - 00:36:24:07
Unknown
What's next for our pro over the next couple of years, So biggest thing this year is we just purchased, a shop, so we're in the process of building it. So we're hoping by the end of year, we'll have our shop, and that can be one thing off the checklist, and I can move hopefully forward.

00:36:24:09 - 00:36:38:10
Unknown
You know, like, I'd like to, like I said, when I next time we do this, like, I'm in here with slacks and a polo, my and I got to have my hair dyed, you know, so, that that's what I would like to. Yeah, that's what I'd like to see in the next year or two. For us.

00:36:38:13 - 00:36:59:04
Unknown
So delegating more of those hats so you can take on more of the business on. Yeah. Operational and and maybe growth and other avenues, you know, so more entrepreneurial, stuff. Absolutely. Where do you see the company going long term?

00:36:59:06 - 00:37:24:10
Unknown
Honestly, my honest opinion, when I, when I first started this, I have a ten year plan. Okay. And that's not me living in Iowa, so, Okay, so I want to. I want to grow it. I want to, you know, provide a great service for homeowners and business owners. And, hopefully one of my guys can take it over from there.

00:37:24:10 - 00:37:44:15
Unknown
And, you know, in ten years or, you know, something like that is is where I see the vision and, and continue the processes that we're doing and we're working on and growing today. Yeah, yeah. Where do you want to go? Somewhere on the beach. I'm a beach guy, for sure. Okay. Beach guy hat on, maybe a Caribbean, maybe I, you know, I don't know, I don't know.

00:37:44:17 - 00:38:04:03
Unknown
Yeah, but, and I just live on a tent on the beach if I, if I could, you know. So taking the whole family there, too. Yeah. I'll take the wife, the kids, they can they can figure it out. You know what? What's they're grown and and but no, my, my my youngest is, Yeah. She's just like me.

00:38:04:03 - 00:38:23:20
Unknown
And she wants the beach. My oldest is, She's not much of a beach. She's not a big water beach there, but she. And she enjoys a suntan, I guess so. Okay. Yeah. Yeah.

00:38:23:22 - 00:38:59:06
Unknown
What advice would you give to a young person that wants to get into business? I would, and this is just me, but I would really do some research, like self, learning, I guess. Soul searching. Soul searching. Like, is this really what you want? Like, really? Maybe talk with other business owners, you know, if you know any and, and, kind of pick their brain and kind of see what really what you're getting into, you know, because it's not for everybody.

00:38:59:10 - 00:39:20:09
Unknown
I mean, it's definitely a lot of time commitment, you know, still to this day, that's one of my my biggest problems is I've spent a lot of time, you know, on my computer, on the phone, at someone's house. So you really got to be ready for that? If you want to grow, you know? But, yeah, I'd really just do.

00:39:20:09 - 00:39:40:01
Unknown
Yeah. Like I said, some soul searching, maybe talk to some business owners and just get things in place, before you really take the leap and and maybe make sure you have some funding might help to, you know, like, make sure you're not have a nest egg. Yeah. Have a nest egg, something like that. Because, you know, things could have gone really south for me right away.

00:39:40:01 - 00:40:10:20
Unknown
And, you know, I might have had to jump back into the field and work for somebody, you know? So, like, you were a lot more prepared than other. Yeah. Others when they jumped. Yeah, yeah. And that goes back to, like I was saying, crossing my airport, my classmates doing things by the book. I really just wanted to make sure I was set myself up for success, you know, and I, and I have a lot of great people in my life that have also made this not a possibility, you know, that has referred to me or gave me opportunities to grow.

00:40:10:22 - 00:40:32:06
Unknown
So, but yeah, like I said, I think the biggest thing would be, just making sure you're ready, making sure you're ready and and have things in place, before you make the jump. I mean, I think it works for some people, but it's helped to helped us grow, I think pretty quickly, doing it that way.

00:40:32:10 - 00:40:51:09
Unknown
Yeah, definitely. I was meeting with a client before this, and he asked me what I was doing. Later today. I said, I'm going to film a podcast with. And I said, all pro. And he's like, oh, I've seen their trucks all around. Yeah, yeah. That's awesome. Yeah, it works. Yeah. No truck grabs work for sure. Yeah, well they better they're expensive.

00:40:51:09 - 00:41:13:11
Unknown
So yeah, we just got to do one too. So we're pretty excited about it. So, so to get that on the road and see what kind of responses we get from it. So yeah, yeah, yeah. If someone listening wanted to take action today, what's one thing they should do? What's the number one thing? Action.

00:41:13:15 - 00:41:36:01
Unknown
And starting a business or, getting into the trades. Yes. You said soul searching, but. Yeah, I mean, if there if it's getting into the trades. Yeah, I think you just try it out, you know? Just just make sure you like working with your hands, getting dirty, getting in places you don't want to be in crawl spaces, attics, you know, dirty situations.

00:41:36:02 - 00:41:57:12
Unknown
If you can handle all that stuff, you know, try it out. You'll know. You'll know within 3 to 6, you know, probably a month. You'll know if you're. It's something that you think you can continuous, you know, starting a business. Yeah. Like I said, just really just make sure you're ready, you know, how do you know you're ready?

00:41:57:14 - 00:42:21:18
Unknown
You don't, you know, but, I think having some things in place would be the biggest thing. I mean, that's me because I'm. I'm kind of, you know, I, I worry about things, I guess, like that. So, if someone's unhappy with where they're at today, what are some things that you would give them advice on to make it that change?

00:42:21:19 - 00:42:48:11
Unknown
Like you've jumped around in your career a little bit? What were some things that helped you navigate that? I think it goes back to, soul searching, I guess, again. Like what? What is it you like? You know what? What is it that you like? You know, because obviously a do you like what you do, but you don't like where you're at, or you don't like what you do, but, like, you know, you like where you're at.

00:42:48:11 - 00:43:07:10
Unknown
You know, it's it's what if it's neither? If it's an either then you need to go do something different, you know. So I just it's it's tough because you know and that's as far as I pro goes. Like I want to try to make it so you like both. You know. Like you like working with us as a company and you like what you're doing.

00:43:07:10 - 00:43:41:17
Unknown
I mean, obviously every day you're not going to like it. But yeah, you know, in the end, I think it's definitely fulfilling. And that's the biggest thing. If it's not fulfilling to you and you're just doing it to, get a paycheck, you know, maybe it's not what you're supposed to be doing, you know? But I mean, I know it's tough to say that, but, because it I mean, I was there, you know, in my 20s, you know, working ten, 12 hours a day, you make an, an hourly wage and, and it just felt like it was just, you know, run and run the race, you know?

00:43:41:17 - 00:44:03:04
Unknown
So, but I liked it. I liked what I was doing, you know, so I think that helps, right? Yeah. Well, where can people follow your journey, connect with Oprah? You can visit us on our Facebook page. Honestly, not sure how you look it up, but, you can, you can get on there and search for pro, including.

00:44:03:04 - 00:44:24:12
Unknown

00:44:24:14 - 00:44:43:19
Unknown
So there should be some good content on there if you, you know, how many thoughts about duct cleaning or maintenance or maybe just processes that a new homeowner or a homeowner should be doing for maintaining their equipment, you know, so maybe some, some key little things that you could do. So, yeah. Any final shout outs?

00:44:43:19 - 00:45:09:03
Unknown
Thoughts? For the listener? Just, you know, I guess I would shout out to, like I said, my, my family and, my friends, I do have a co partner in this business. Steve, he's been, he's been, you know, a crutch, to get this going. So he's, like a big shout out to him and his wife, Teresa.

00:45:09:05 - 00:45:27:09
Unknown
And then. Yeah, my my wife Ashley, and my daughters, Taylor and and Skyler. So. And, and then also our sister to God for. Yeah. Let me do what I love. So that's awesome. So yeah, thanks for coming on the show. Appreciate it. Thank you for sharing your story. Our parks thank you sir. Keep us on.
